How to Spark Fall Sales: Introduce the Sale Before the Sale

nordstromsaleWe’ve covered fashion consumer behavior and the economy many times before, but the economy still being what it is, here’s another post to add to the heap. Years ago, I became an insanely loyal Nordstrom customer and as a loyal customer, my favorite time of year to shop, next to the holiday shopping parties, is the Anniversary Sale where select fall items are on sale for a limited time before they are sold at their regular price, and before they go on sale again after the season’s over.

Now, I thought this was just a Nordstrom summer dealie, but apparently a couple other retailers are on the bandwagon now too. In my inbox, I’ve already gotten invites to a special Kate Spade and J. Crew fall preview sale.

Many economists like to look the acceleration and deceleration of retail sales as an indicator of economic improvement, because let’s face it, if you’re spending more on clothes and shoes, chances are that you’ve got your food, transportation, and housing costs more than covered. From April to June of this year, retail sales dipped slightly and what a better way to accelerate retail sales than to introduce consumers to more sales! And what a better way to pave the road to a better economy than increasing smart spending . . . here’s to hoping things are that simple. Sadly, they’re not, but in the mean time, why not pamper yourself while we wait for better days?

So, what damage have I already done at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

  • At the Giorgio Armani counter, I picked up another Lasting Silk UV Foundation SPF 20 and a couple “Eyes to Kill” Intense Silk Eyeshadows. My reward: a free gift that included a Luminous Silk Foundation sample and a few other skincare items. Not the best gift because I’ve seen Nordstrom do better in previous years, but I’ll take what I can get.
  • At the Lancôme counter, I picked up a Hypnose Drama Eye Set . . . value does not come better packaged than this.
  • Finally, my last and favorite purchase is this gorgeous Kate Spade New York “Hancock Park – Jeanne” Leather Satchel in Tarmark/Light Smoke . . . the perfect chic bag for the working corporette!
